UNOSDP Releases Annual Report 2012 entitled "The Year of the Youth Leadership Programme"

Geneva/New York (UNOSDP) - The United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) have this month released their Annual Report 2012. The report presents the main activities conducted by the UN Special Adviser and Office on Sport for Development and Peace in 2012 in the areas of policy work (Chapter One), partnership building and coordination (Chapter Two) and the Youth Leadership programme, project support and implementation (Chapter Three).
2012 was the year when the Youth Leadership Programme was first launched. With three successful camps taking place over the year taking place in Qatar, Switzerland and Germany.
In the foreword of the report, the Special Adviser, Mr. Wilfried Lemke, highlights the importance of the Youth Leadership Programme “With the launch of this Programme, we intend on the one hand to assist young women and men around the world by giving them a chance to move forward in their personal and professional development and on the other hand to assist their local communities in achieving global development goals through sport.”
Highlights of the year included:
  • Human Rights Council continued its engagement in relation to sport with the panel discussion on “Human Rights through Sport and the Olympic Ideals.”
  • Geneva Group of Friends holding their first meeting in 2012.
  • The continued support extended to 5 grassroots projects worldwide thanks to the one million euro award received in 2010 from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA);
  • The inaugural ‘UNOSDP Youth Leadership Camp’ held in Doha in January 2012.
